The 2022 Texas basketball recruiting class arrived on the Forty Acres last summer with the hopes that they could elevate this program to become one of the best teams in the country and push for Big 12 and NCAA titles in 2023. And while the contributions from the 2022 signing class haven’t lived up to the hype quite yet, Texas is still in a position to very much compete for a Big 12 title and make a deep run in the NCAA Tournament.

Texas signed four high school recruits in the 2022 class. It’s also worth noting that there were two transfer portal players that Texas signed in the 2022 class. But we’re not including the two portal players for the Longhorns in this conversation, only the high school recruits.

Eric Bossi of 247Sports did a piece this week looking back at the top 10 ranked 2022 men’s hoops recruiting classes in the country, where Texas ranked at No. 6. The sentiment from that article reflected the idea that while this class hasn’t lived up to the billing quite yet, there is still a ton of room for growth.

And if this core from the Longhorns 2022 class is able to find a real breakthrough in the next month or so, the impact on this team would be immeasurable.

With that in mind, here’s a look at a re-grade for the Longhorns 2022 signing class a few months into the 2022-23 season.

Rowan Brumbaugh, G

It’s easy to forget how highly touted the four-star Northfield Mount Hermon (MA) point guard Rowan Brumbaugh was as a high school recruit. Brumbaugh was rated as a top 100 high school prospect in the nation for the 2022 cycle by nearly all of the major recruiting services, outside of 247Sports.

And even 247Sports rated him as the No. 132 recruit in the nation for the 2022 cycle in the Top247.

The size and basketball IQ that Brumbaugh brings to the table at the point guard position made him a special prospect that drew attention from the likes of the Kansas Jayhawks, Maryland Terrapins, Oregon Ducks, and Wisconsin Badgers.

But Brumbaugh ultimately came into a crowded situation in Texas’ backcourt last offseason, leading him to take a redshirt year. For that reason, Brumbaugh gets an inconclusive evaluation in this re-grade for the Longhorns 2022 class.

I still like what Brumbaugh brings to the table for this Texas backcourt unit. He is a smart two-way player that brings a lot of length and excellent court vision to the table. Brumbaugh should be in the conversation to be one of the top three guards in the rotation for the Longhorns next season.
