The latest addition to the Longhorns 2022 class this past recruiting cycle was the under-the-radar three-star McKinney (TX) power forward Alex Anamekwe. The former SMU Mustangs pledge Anamekwe committed to Texas late last spring. And he would enroll at Texas less than four months later.

Anamekwe was a late target by former Texas head coach Chris Beard and this staff to fill a depth need at forward in the 2022 class. He is a gritty and physically-gifted 6-foot-6 and 200-pound forward that was a solid late-cycle evaluation by Texas’ staff.

The Dallas-Fort Worth Metroplex native has a lot of long-term upside as he will be a multi-year contributor in Texas’ frontcourt rotation.

It was always expected that the start in terms of on-court production at Texas would be slow for Anamekwe. He did not commit to Texas in the 2022 class with the thought in mind that he would come in and be an immediate impact forward this season.

So far this season, Anamekwe has averaged 6.1 minutes per game over the course of nine games played. Most of his minutes came late in games, or when Texas was up big against lower-tier opponents, during the non-conference slate. He’s only played in one Big 12 contest this season, back on Jan. 3 against the Kansas State Wildcats.

In the nine games he’s played this season, Anamekwe averaged two points per game, 0.8 rebounds, 0.1 assists, 0.2 steals, no blocks, and 0.4 turnovers while shooting 8-of-13 from the field and 2-of-3 from beyond the arc.

I hope to see Anamekwe continue to develop his offensive game given how his physical tools and vertical ability should be able to elevate his game near the basket. He’s also got the tools and defensive chops to be a standout one-on-one defender in the near future.
