The final potential piece was put in place in the 2023 Texas football recruiting class early this week. On Feb. 7, Texas was able to flip the commitment of the touted four-star Red Oak (TX) defensive back Warren Roberson from the TCU Horned Frogs.

Flipping Roberson from TCU brings head coach Steve Sarkisian and the Longhorns up to 25 commits from the high school ranks in the 2023 recruiting class. There are also four NCAA Transfer Portal additions in the Longhorns 2023 class, highlighted by the former Georgia Bulldogs sophomore wide receiver AD Mitchell and Arkansas Razorbacks redshirt junior safety Jalen Catalon.

According to the 247Sports Team Composite Rankings, the 2023 Texas recruiting class ranks at No. 3 in the nation and in the top spot in the Big 12 ahead of the Oklahoma Sooners after reeling in Roberson on Feb. 7.

Texas probably doesn’t have much of any movement left in the 2023 recruiting class, outside of a couple of remaining storylines to watch. For the most part, the focus will now turn to the Longhorns 2024 and 2025 classes with the bulk of the action during the late signing period already having taken place.

Who’s next for Texas football after landing 4-Star DB Warren Roberson?

Here’s a look at a prediction of who the next commit will be for the Longhorns after landing Roberson on Feb. 7.

James Peoples, RB

Texas has zoned in on a few key running back targets in the 2024 class in the last few months. Five-star IMG Academy running back Jerrick Gibson is clearly the top priority at the position with other recruits such as four-star San Antonio Veterans Memorial product James Peoples and four-star Longview product Taylor Tatum being firmly on the Longhorns’ radar in the 2024 class.

Peoples is definitely a priority at the position that RB coach Tashard Choice and the Longhorns have made a real impression on in the last six or eight months. He has visited Austin four times since last summer, including an unofficial trip for Junior Day a few weeks ago.

Choice has a really strong relationship with Peoples and his camp. According to a report from Jason Suchomel of Orangebloods over the weekend (subscriber content), the most important factor to Peoples in his recruitment is relationship-building.

And with how much he gushed over Choice in this OB report last weekend, I can confidently say that Texas sits in a good spot with Peoples at the moment.

Peoples announced on social media that he will be releasing a top seven on Feb. 9. It sounds like Texas will be in the mix in that top seven. And it’s clear that Texas should be considered at or near the top of the list for Peoples if the way he talks about Choice and the number of times he’s visited Austin in recent months is any indication.
