Potential position changes are always something intriguing to watch in spring ball for the Texas football program. In fact, it is one of the most relevant storylines to watch around the entire college football landscape in terms of the meaningful adjustments that various programs can make in spring camp.

The impact that possible position changes could make on head coach Steve Sarkisian and the Longhorns in spring ball this year looks to be very noteworthy. Texas has already made one reported position change heading into spring ball, and it sounds like more could be on the horizon.

Last offseason, Texas made some impactful position changes in the spring, namely moving senior defensive back Anthony Cook from nickel to boundary safety. Cook wound up being one of the staples of Texas’ secondary last season at the boundary safety position.

We also saw sophomore Morice Blackwell Jr. make multiple position changes last year from sam linebacker to safety and back.

Spring position changes that could be ahead for Texas football

Since we’re less than one month from the start of spring drills on the Forty Acres, it’s a good time to look ahead to the possible position changes to watch for the Longhorns in camp. Here’s a look at three possible position changes that could be on the horizon.

Savion Red*

Old/current position: Wide receiver

New position: Running back

The reason why there is an asterisk next to Savion Red’s name is that it was already reported that he is moving from wide receiver to running back ahead of spring ball. Inside Texas first reported on Feb. 7 that the second-year Grand Prairie High School product will move from slot receiver to running back to settle some depth needs in the backfield.

We also already mentioned on the site this week that it makes a lot of sense that Texas will move Red from slot receiver to running back for multiple reasons.

Red will help add some depth in the running back room behind the likes of redshirt sophomore Jonathon Brooks, freshman Cedric Baxter Jr., redshirt senior Keilan Robinson, and sophomore Jaydon Blue. He will also bring a different type of versatility to the table given his experience taking reps as a quarterback coming out of high school and his role as a slot receiver last season at Texas.

I really like this move as Red will have an opportunity to make an impact on this offense and be utilized in ways that he wasn’t able to coming out of the slot. This position change should benefit both Red and the Texas offense as a whole.
