The next step in the quest for interim head coach Rodney Terry and No. 6 ranked Texas basketball to claim the Big 12 regular season title comes at home this weekend against head coach Porter Moser and the Oklahoma Sooners in the back end of the Red River Rivalry game on the hardwood. In the second of two meetings between Texas and Oklahoma this regular season, Terry’s squad will be looking to pull off the sweep.

The first of the two meetings between the Longhorns and Sooners this season resulted in a narrow 70-69 win at the Lloyd Noble Center in Norman on Dec. 31. That win over the Sooners on New Year’s Eve moved Texas’ winning streak over Oklahoma to four games, dating back to the 2020-21 season.

Terry and the Longhorns come into this matchup against Oklahoma with a record of 20-6 (9-4 Big 12) following a bad loss on the road at the hands of the Texas Tech Red Raiders on Feb. 13, by the final score of 74-67. Texas Tech was able to get just its third win in Big 12 play by toppling Texas earlier in the week.

Texas has a record of 5-1 at home in Big 12 play this season heading into this matchup against the Sooners.

Meanwhile, Oklahoma comes into this game with a record of 13-13 (3-10 Big 12) after a surprising upset win over the No. 12 Kansas State Wildcats at home in Norman on Feb. 14 by the final score of 79-65. That win over Kansas State snapped Oklahoma’s four-game losing streak. Oklahoma had also lost 10 of its last 13 prior to that upset win over the Wildcats.

Here’s a look at the TV/streaming information and game time as Texas gets set to host Oklahoma at home at the Moody Center in Austin on Feb. 18.

Texas vs. Oklahoma preview

Oklahoma will be looking to make an unlikely late-season push to get into the NCAA Tournament after going through a tough stretch in the last few weeks, which included multiple losing streaks of three or more games.

According to TeamRankings, Oklahoma only has an eight percent chance of getting its name called on Selection Sunday for a spot in the NCAA Tournament.

Meanwhile, Texas is still vying for the Big 12 regular season crown while looking to solidify a one or a two-seed for the Big Dance.

This is the type of game that the Longhorns must be able to come away with as it won’t get any easier in the last couple of weeks of the regular season. In fact, this matchup against Oklahoma is the one that gives the Longhorns the highest percentage chance of winning of all the games remaining on the regular season schedule.

If Texas wants to be able to come out on top in this one by a comfortable margin, the top senior trio of shooting guard/wing Sir’Jabari Rice, forward Timmy Allen, and guard Marcus Carr must be on point. Allen and Rice had off games in Texas’ loss to Texas Tech on Feb. 13.

Texas must able to be able to limit the effectiveness of standout senior scoring guard Grant Sherfield, who put up nearly two dozen points on the Longhorns the last time these two teams met. Sherfield and the Sooners came very close to making Texas pay for letting him have a big day on the offensive end on Dec. 31.

This is a very winnable game for Texas. A win here could give the Longhorns a nice boost to start closing out the home stretch of the regular season on a high note. The scheduling doesn’t get much more forgiving than this in the last few games, in which all four come against ranked opponents.
