Texas hammers OU for its most lopsided loss so far this season

So far this season, two of the most lopsided losses in Big 12 play came at the expense of the Sooners. And of the seven times in Big 12 play this season that a team lost by a margin of at least 23 points, Oklahoma was on the losing end of three of them.

Oklahoma had a rough run in the last month, at least up until its surprising home win at the Lloyd Noble Center in Norman on Feb. 14 over the No. 12 Kansas State Wildcats. Other than that 14-point win over Kansas State earlier this week, Oklahoma had suffered a whopping six losses by a double-digit margin in the last month alone.

That is more double-digit losses in the last month than any other Big 12 team (even Texas Tech), and it’s not even close.

As this season has moved along, opponents were able to figure out and take advantage of some spotty areas of Oklahoma’s defense and its overreliance on senior scoring guard Grant Sherfield.

In Big 12 play, Oklahoma only has two players averaging more than nine points per game (Sherfield and senior forward Jalen Hill). The lack of secondary scoring options for Oklahoma has led to some lengthy dry spells offensively late in games this season.

Oklahoma also isn’t the least bit disruptive on the defensive end of the floor in Big 12 play this season. Oklahoma is actually the only team in Big 12 play this season to force a single-digit number of turnovers (per Sports Reference).

All in all, when you combine a complete lack of secondary scoring options with the inability to generate many turnovers on a consistent basis, you get a situation where it is really difficult to win games in a conference as deep as the Big 12.

Add in the fact that Texas has the most productive bench in the Big 12 in terms of scoring output, and this looks like a game that has the makings of a blowout this weekend. For Texas to claim the most lopsided win of the season in the Big 12, it would have to one-up its dominant 34-point victory over West Virginia at the Moody Center last weekend.
