Texas Football: 3 biggest remaining portal needs entering spring ball
Wide receiver
It goes without saying that Sark and the Longhorns like to look into the portal each and every offseason to find some upgrades at the wide receiver position. Last year, it was the former Wyoming Cowboys redshirt junior boundary receiver Isaiah Neyor, Alabama Crimson Tide freshman Agiye Hall, and Iowa State Cyclones senior Tarique Milton that Texas added out of the portal to sure up the depth in the wide receiver room.
And of those three portal wideouts that the Longhorns added last offseason, only Neyor arrived on campus before spring ball. The latter two (Milton and Hall) were added for various reasons to sure up the wide receiver room heading into the fall.
There are a couple of reasons why I believe that Texas will be active in the portal once again at the wide receiver position post-spring ball.
First off, Texas could experience some attrition in the wide receiver room following the departure of the former wide receivers coach/pass game coordinator Brennan Marion to the UNLV Rebels. Texas went a different direction in terms of the personality and background of this hire at wide receivers coach when Sark hired an NFL guy in Chris Jackson away from the Jacksonville Jaguars.
Secondly, it looks like Texas will be really young at a lot of the receiver spots during the spring. Texas moving second-year wideout Savion Red from slot receiver to running back entering the spring means that there is even less proven depth across the board in this room.
The combination of possible looming roster attrition at wideout along with the already young group that Texas has in the mix heading into spring ball makes me think it is a given that Sark and Jackson look in the portal to sure up the depth in this room in May.
Texas already added one portal wideout this offseason in the former Georgia Bulldogs sophomore AD Mitchell to have a nice pairing on the boundary along with Neyor.
Where I think Texas could still use some help out of the portal at wideout is with a player that can play at both the x spot behind Xavier Worthy and out of the slot. It makes a lot of sense for Texas to hypothetically pursue a grad transfer with a lot of proven experience that can sure up the depth in a couple of spots in this room heading into the fall.
Texas doesn’t need someone that will make a long-term impact here, as this young group of wideouts has a lot of talent in the mix. Proven production is largely what Texas needs here.
