Texas Football: DeAndre Moore Jr. ‘receiving praise’ ahead of spring
We’ve talked a lot about the status of the early enrollees coming out of the winter conditioning from the 2023 Texas football signing class. Texas and head coach Steve Sarkisian were able to get more than a dozen early enrollees via high school recruits in the 2023 class to campus for the spring semester.
And of those 14 early enrollees that the Longhorns have on campus for spring ball this offseason, at least a half-dozen of them have made very positive early impressions on those in and around the program. In fact, I would say we’ve heard positive feedback about a double-digit number of early enrollees coming out of winter workouts this offseason.
One of the early enrollees at the skill positions that really seems to have hit the ground running is the former four-star Louisville Cardinals commit and St. John Bosco (CA) wide receiver DeAndre Moore Jr. Moore seems to have made a big splash upon his arrival on campus early this offseason, especially in terms of the impression he’s made on new wide receivers coach Chris Jackson.
It was clear that Moore was going to get right down to work when word started coming out that he was frequently seen in throwing sessions with fellow early enrollees such as quarterback Arch Manning in the last couple of months.
New Texas football WR DeAndre Moore Jr. “catching the attention” of his teammates this winter
It also sounds like Moore has made a seamless transition to life on a college campus. This is a good indication that he arrived on campus with the right mindset to get right down to work. His mind seems to be in the right place, which allows him to get his body right to compete for a spot on the two-deep heading into spring ball.
A report from CJ Vogel of TFB Texas (donor content) on Feb. 17 echoes the sentiment that Moore is doing a lot of the right things to earn the respect of the coaches and his teammates. He apparently has grabbed “the attention of some older folks on the team” with the way that he just put his head down and grinded away in the winter conditioning program and in throwing sessions in the last couple of months.
It’s huge to hear that the trio of new additions to the wide receiver room this semester in the former Georgia Bulldogs sophomore AD Mitchell, DeSoto product Johntay Cook II, and Moore are all integrating nicely with their teammates and the coaches heading into spring ball. That is indicative of a strong wide receiver room that could be the most formidable of Sark’s time on campus thus far.
For Moore specifically, it sounds like he is going to be in a spot to compete for more second-team reps than originally anticipated at slot receiver heading into spring drills next month. The move for second-year wideout Savion Red to convert to running back this spring opens the door for Moore to win the backup job out of the slot behind redshirt senior Jordan Whittington.
Texas is now just a few weeks away from the start of spring drills, with the first practice set to specifically take place on March 6. Moore and the Longhorns will get 15 spring practices before taking part in the annual Orange-White spring football game at Darrell K. Royal-Texas Memorial Stadium on April 15.
