The first home game of the 2023 regular season lies ahead for head coach David Pierce and Texas baseball at the friendly confines of UFCU Disch-Falk Field in Austin on Feb. 21. Texas will host the Texas A&M-Corpus Christi Islanders in a one-game midweek showdown to open up the home slate for the 2023 campaign.

Pierce and the Longhorns are sporting a record of 0-3 (0-0 Big 12) following a winless weekend at the College Baseball Showdown at Globe Life Field in Arlington, TX. Texas lost to three solid SEC opponents last weekend including the No. 8 Arkansas Razorbacks, Mizzou Tigers, and No. 10 Vanderbilt Commodores.

Texas will be looking to continue its home winning streak that currently sits at nine games, dating back to the stretch run of the 2022 regular season.

Meanwhile, Texas A&M-Corpus Christi is sporting a record of 2-1 (0-0 Southland) following its opening weekend series win over UT-Arlington at home. This matchup against the Longhorns will be the Islanders’ first road game of the 2023 regular season.

According to Texassports.com, Pierce and the Longhorns will give the start on the mound to the 6-foot-4 redshirt sophomore right-hander Lebarron Johnson Jr. Johnson has made one appearance on the mound for the Longhorns this season, which came out of the bullpen in one inning against Arkansas in the opener on Feb. 17.

He had a rough outing in his one inning of work on the mound against Arkansas, as Johnson allowed three hits, two earned runs, and he walked one batter. As a result of the two earned runs, Johnson picked up the loss in that game against Arkansas.

Johnson comes into this matchup with a record of 0-1 and an 18.00 earned run average.

Last season, Johnson did make 18 appearances for the Longhorns, where he registered a record of 0-1. He also posted a solid 3.18 ERA in 17 innings pitched, with a 3.18 ERA, 21 strikeouts, 12 hits, and an opponent batting average of just .194.

Meanwhile, Texas A&M-CC will give sophomore right-hander Zach Garcia the start in this game. Garcia comes into this one with a record of 0-0 after pitching two innings in the Islanders’ win over UT-Arlington last weekend. He allowed two earned runs, gave up four hits, and struck out one batter in his first start of the season.

Johnson has faced the Islanders once in his career when he appeared in one inning out of the bullpen in Texas’ dominant 12-0 win over A&M-CC on Feb. 22, 2022. He didn’t give up any hits or runs while striking out two in that appearance against the Islanders last season.

Garcia faced Texas once, which came in a start on Feb. 23 at the in Corpus Christi last season for the Islanders. While Garcia did pick up the loss, he was solid in four innings of work on the mound. He gave up just one earned run and three hits while striking out two batters in a 5-4 loss for the Islanders at the hands of the Longhorns on Feb. 23, 2022.

If Texas wants to secure a comfortable win over Texas A&M-Corpus Christi, this team must get more out of the bats and the gloves. Texas gave up a whopping eight unearned runs in the convincing 12-2 loss to Vanderbilt on Feb. 19, thanks to five errors. And Texas was only able to average three runs and 4.3 hits per game in the College Baseball Showdown last weekend.
