Texas Football: 3 true freshmen that stole the show in winter conditioning
Johntay Cook II, WR
Throughout the winter conditioning program, it sounded like each of the new additions to the program via the 2023 class in the wide receiver room was making quite the impression on the coaches. That included the former elite five-star DeSoto wide receiver recruit Johntay Cook II.
But we also heard a lot about the positive impressions that the likes of the former Georgia Bulldogs sophomore wideout AD Mitchell and fellow early enrollee DeAndre Moore Jr. made on the coaches in the last couple of months.
All in all, this wide receiver room is looking like it will be stocked with even more depth and talent than there was in each of the last two years. The addition of Cook is a big reason why.
Cook arrived on campus as the highest-rated wide receiver recruit in the Longhorns 2023 class. And with that comes a lot of hype in terms of his ability to make an immediate impact on this offense this fall.
Given the word on the street that Cook has put on some necessary weight coming out of the winter conditioning program, and I think it checks out thus far that Cook will be an early impact player in 2023. Cook has apparently put on around 10 or 15 pounds since he first arrived on campus (per a report from Mike Roach of Horns247).
Cook has already shown off what he can do as a technical route runner and his ability has a consistent pass-catcher. Getting his body right and adding some necessary muscle mass ahead of spring ball checks some boxes that were much needed for Cook to take the next steps early this offseason.
