The first full weekend series for head coach David Pierce and Texas baseball at home at UFCU Disch-Falk Field in Austin this season will begin on Feb. 24. Texas will host the Indiana Hoosiers and head coach Jeff Mercer at the friendly confines of the Disch this weekend for a three-game series.

Pierce and the Longhorns come into this three-game weekend series against the Hoosiers with a record of 1-3 (0-0 Big 12). Texas’ last game saw it dismantle the Texas A&M-Corpus Christi Islanders in the home opener at the Disch on Feb. 21, by the final score of 12-2. That was good for the first win of the regular season for the Longhorns after going winless in three games at the College Baseball Showdown last weekend.

Meanwhile, Indiana comes into the weekend with a record of 2-2 (0-0 Big Ten). Indiana’s last game saw it convincingly defeat the Miami (OH) Redhawks at home at Bart Kaufman Field in Bloomington on Feb. 21, by the final score of 13-5. The Hoosiers also went 1-2 in its opening weekend series against the Auburn Tigers.

Here’s a look at the betting odds and game prediction as Texas gets set to host Indiana at home at Disch-Falk Field for the three-game series opener on Feb. 24, with the first pitch time set for 6:30 p.m. CT. Each of the three games in this weekend series between Texas and Indiana will be broadcast live on Longhorn Network.

Texas is a 2.5-run favorite against Indiana and the over/under is set at 10.5 runs (per DraftKings Sportsbook).

The moneyline favors Texas (-300) over Indiana (+235).

D1Baseball’s week 2 staff picks for the 2023 season unanimously have the Longhorns defeating the Hoosiers in this three-game weekend series.

Texas vs. Indiana Game 1 prediction

After posting a stellar performance in the season opener for the Longhorns in the College Baseball Showdown last weekend against the No. 8 Arkansas Razorbacks, junior left-hander Lucas Gordon will get the call on the mound on Feb. 24 against Indiana.

The pitching matchup in this game will be Gordon against the former Siena transfer and the towering 6-foot-6 super senior left-hander Ben Seiler, per Texassports.com game notes.

Gordon pitched five scoreless innings in his first start of the season against the Razorbacks in Arlington, TX, last weekend. But the loss for Texas ultimately gave Gordon a no-decision on Feb. 17.

Meanwhile, Seiler got the loss in his first start of the season last weekend against Auburn. He went 2.1 innings on the mound, giving up three earned runs, against the Tigers on Feb. 17.

Texas was able to gash a left-handed starting pitcher earlier in the week when it gave Texas A&M-Corpus Christi’s Zach Garcia the loss in 2.2 innings on the mound, allowing four earned runs and seven hits.

If Texas can continue to find a plethora of offensive success against a lefty to open up this weekend’s series against the Hoosiers, that will bode well for the team’s fortunes throughout. I also like the matchup for Gordon here. Gordon showed us in the opener that he’s got the makings of a really formidable weekend ace to lead this rotation in 2023.

This three-game weekend series for the Longhorns against the Hoosiers is huge. Texas can continue to get this thing moving in the right direction before hosting the No. 1 ranked LSU Tigers in a one-game midweek showdown on Feb. 28.

Game 1 final score prediction: Texas-8, Indiana-3
