With winter workouts about to wrap up for the Texas football program, the team is gearing up to take part in spring camp. Head coach Steve Sarkisian and Texas will kick off spring ball with the first day of practice on March 6.

There are already quite a few new additions to the program among the early enrollees from the high school ranks in the 2023 class and the NCAA Transfer Portal pick-ups that look ready to contribute right away in 2023. Among those is the No. 1 ranked running back recruit in the nation in the 2023 class, former five-star Orlando Edgewater (FL) product Cedric Baxter Jr.

The early returns that we’ve heard about regarding the impression that Baxter made on those in and around the Texas program in the midst of the winter conditioning program were very encouraging. He’s really put his head down to get to work right away.

It sounds like Baxter has also fully taken advantage of the opportunity to get more attention from the staff with other key running backs on the roster such as sophomore Jaydon Blue and redshirt sophomore Jonathon Brooks recovering from various injuries.

New Texas football RB Cedric Baxter Jr. continues to impress early this offseason

According to a report from Hudson Standish of Horns247 (paid content) on Feb. 24, “everybody around the program raves about” the true freshman running back Baxter early this offseason. This report also mentions that Baxter is definitely pushing “for significant playing time” with the impression he’s made right away in workouts this offseason.

Baxter appears to be making all the right moves in workouts since he arrived on campus last month. It looks like he’ll head into spring camp with plenty of momentum to continue to prove that he should get a large share of the reps out of the backfield.

Texas finished up last season with a record of 8-5 (6-3 Big 12) following a loss to the No. 12 Washington Huskies in the Alamo Bowl on Dec. 29. Baxter and the Longhorns will take part in the annual Orange-White spring football game at Darrell K. Royal-Texas Memorial Stadium on April 15.
