The second de-commitment from the 2024 Texas football recruiting class in the last few months took place over the weekend. Texas and cornerbacks coach Terry Joseph lost the commitment of the highly touted four-star Aledo cornerback Jaden Allen on Feb. 25.

Allen announced that he would be re-opening his recruitment with a post on his Twitter timeline on the evening of Feb. 25.

He now joins four-star Daingerfield (TX) athlete Aeryn Hampton as the two recruits to de-commit from the Longhorns in the 2024 class to date. Hampton de-committed from Texas in late November 2022 after being one of the first 2024 prospects to join the class early last year.

The de-commitment from Allen comes a little less than one month after he made an unofficial visit to Tuscaloosa to see the Alabama Crimson Tide (specifically on Jan. 28). Allen’s unofficial trip to Alabama was his first visit since committing to Texas more than one year ago.

A report from Justin Wells of Inside Texas (paid content) on Feb. 21 gave some hints as to what was potentially to come in this recruitment. That IT piece from Wells gave the update that Alabama and the USC Trojans were two schools that were “really coming strong” to chip away at Allen’s commitment to Texas.

When Allen originally made the unofficial trip to Alabama last month, it sounds like it did take the Texas coaching staff by surprise to some degree. It didn’t sound like it was a well-known fact that Allen would be taking that trip to Tuscaloosa on the final weekend in January.

And when Alabama is coming on strong to a recruit that is committed to Texas, that is always something to at least monitor. We’ve seen more than a couple of occasions where Alabama swooped in on a Texas commit or a recruit that was heavily interested in the Longhorns in the last few years.
