Texas Football: Tashard Choice has incredible relationship with 5-Star RB
Running back recruiting is one of the strongest areas for Texas football‘s coaching staff on the trail in the last few cycles. Texas and running backs coach Tashard Choice signed the No. 1 prospect in the nation at the position in the 2023 class in the elite five-star Orlando Edgewater (FL) product Cedric Baxter Jr.
Choice and the Longhorns are now after the No. 1 ranked running back prospect in the nation in the 2024 class in the elite five-star IMG Academy product Jerrick Gibson.
Texas’ staff (particularly Choice) has done a nice job in this recruitment building a tight relationship with Gibson and his camp since last summer. Choice seems to have one of the best relationships built with Gibson of any position coach in the country too.
Gibson usually speaks glowingly of Choice and the Longhorns staff when he’s done interviews in the last few months.

And what he said to On3’s Chad Simmons in a recent piece that was published this weekend further highlighted how good the connection is between Choice and Gibson. He mentioned that Choice “is one of the big reasons why I’m considering Texas”.

Between the track record that Choice has built recruit at the running back position and the relationships he’s been able to forge on the trail, it’s clear that Texas’ RB coach has made quite the impression on Gibson thus far.
Choice was one of the biggest factors in Texas being able to win the recruitment to land Baxter out of Florida. And it could be a similar narrative if Texas is able to nab the No. 1 ranked running back recruit in the nation out of the same state for the second consecutive cycle.
It’s also worth noting that Gibson mentioned not just Choice in this piece, but the entire Texas coaching staff in terms of the knowledge and connection with the players. That goes to show that Gibson is pretty bought into what the Texas coaches are selling him so far.
Texas currently holds commitments from two recruits in the 2024 class following the de-commitment of the four-star Aledo cornerback Jaden Allen this weekend. According to the 247Sports Team Composite Rankings, the 2024 Texas recruiting class ranks at No. 28 in the nation and in the middle of the pack in the Big 12.
