There are plenty of storylines to dissect coming out of the first day of spring practice for the Texas football program on the morning of March 6. Texas and head coach Steve Sarkisian had some interesting nuggets emerge from the first day of spring camp during the 2023 offseason this week.

And one of the more interesting nuggets that Sark himself gave to the media during his press conference on March 6 involved rising junior wide receiver Xavier Worthy. During media availability on March 6, Sark mentioned that Worthy played the second half of the 2022 season with a broken hand.

This could be one of the reasons why Worthy struggled with some drop issues down the stretch last season. Worthy did have five drops (per PFF) in the final four games of the 2022 season. That is the largest number of drops for Worthy over the span of any four-game stretch in his collegiate career to date.

Moreover, it does sound like Worthy is ready to go to fully participate in spring camp this offseason. He was a full participant in spring drills on the first day of practice on March 6, at least from what was witnessed during the open media window.

As expected, Worthy took the first-team practice reps at the x-wide receiver spot in drills on this day. True freshman early enrollee Johntay Cook II took the second-team reps at x-wide receiver behind Worthy on the first day of spring practice.

While Worthy was still productive for Texas last season, he did regress statistically year-over-year. He registered 60 catches for 760 receiving yards and 10 total touchdowns during the 2022 season.

Texas finished up last season with a record of 8-5 (6-3 Big 12) following a loss to the No. 12 Washington Huskies in the Alamo Bowl. Spring camp began for Worthy and the Longhorns on March 6, with the annual Orange-White spring football game set for April 15 at Darrell K. Royal-Texas Memorial Stadium.
