Savion Red and Cedric Baxter Jr. steal the show

There are a lot of reasons to be excited about what Sark and the Longhorns have brewing at the skill positions this spring. Texas goes two or three deep at every skill position across the board on the offensive side of the ball.

And despite Texas missing the likes of redshirt senior running back Keilan Robinson and redshirt sophomore Jonathon Brooks due to various injury issues early in spring ball, this position still looks pretty good for Tashard Choice and the Longhorns.

With Keilan and Brooks out or limited in the first couple of spring practices this week, we’ve seen a new trio of running backs step up for Choice and the Longhorns in drills and one-on-ones. The trio of sophomore Jaydon Blue, true freshman Cedric Baxter Jr., and sophomore Savion Red is doing a nice job of making a big impression on the coaches so far this week.

Baxter is apparently looking to get around 225 pounds when he reaches his true fighting weight ahead of the 2023 season. And Red has really done a nice job of fitting in the running back room seamlessly after being converted from wide receiver in the last couple of months.

We already discussed on the site that Red received a lot of “praise” from Choice and the rest of the Texas coaching staff early in spring camp. It’s worth noting that we are getting a similar sentiment echoed from the reactions of the Texas coaches to the impression that Baxter has made in the first two practices of spring ball.
