Texas Basketball: 3 elite blue-chip recruits the Horns can nab in March
Hudson Greer, SG
Among the early 2025 priority recruits on the board for the Longhorns in the state of Texas is the highly touted four-star Austin Lake Travis shooting guard Hudson Greer. The sizable and skilled 6-foot-7 and 180-pound two-guard /wing is already rated as a top 50 recruit in the nation in the 2025 class by some of the major recruiting services.
On3 even ranks Greer as high as a top three prospect in the state of Texas in the 2025 class. Greer is clearly drawing some early praise among the top shooting guards across the country in the 2025 class, and rightly so.
Greer is an athletic two-guard/wing with excellent court vision and natural scoring ability. He’s got a smooth shot that allows him to be a scoring threat from multiple levels of the floor in the offensive half-court.
What’s so exciting about the trajectory of Greer’s game, though, is that he isn’t even close to done improving and growing. It’s very possible that Greer could still add an inch or two to his height, and he can still add plenty of weight to fill out his frame.
Greer also brings an excellent level of versatility to the table as he’s already displaying the ability to play any position between the two and the four. He has the length and inside scoring ability to put the ball in the hoop within six or eight feet of the basket. Greer also has an underrated back-to-the-basket scoring game.
But you can’t sleep on Greer’s ability to score as a face-up ball-handler. He’s an excellent option as a secondary or tertiary ball-handler and scorer that can still shred opposing defenses with his often-overlooked court vision and high basketball IQ.
Moreover, there are still some strides that Greer needs to make in terms of adding some weight to be able to better contend with some of the more sizable bigs in the paint. He’s also still improving his off-ball play on both ends of the floor so that he can become a more well-rounded offensive threat while developing his defensive game.
All in all, it’s clear to see why Texas offered Greer in the early stages of his recruitment. Getting a foot in the door early was key here since Greer already has the makings of a fast riser in the 2025 class this summer.
Greer mentioned in a piece with On3’s Billy Embody last fall (paid content) that relationships will be the biggest factor in his recruitment. That just goes to show how important it was that the Longhorns were in on him as early as they were.
Texas is definitely one of the schools to watch in Greer’s recruitment early on. Some of the other schools in consistent communication with Greer are the Texas Tech Red Raiders, SMU Mustangs, UCLA Bruins, and Saint Mary’s, among a few others.
Greer visited campus last fall unofficially, and it will be imperative that the Longhorns keep him around the Forty Acres frequently as this recruitment progresses. This is the type of prospect that Texas must be able to find a way to keep in its own backyard.
