Texas basketball and interim head coach Rodney Terry received some unfortunate news on the evening of March 9 ahead of their first game in the Big 12 Men’s Tournament. Terry’s squad will reportedly be missing senior forward Timmy Allen, who is dealing with a lower right leg injury.

This report came courtesy of Joe Cook of Inside Texas on March 9.

Cook’s tweet noted that the source on this report was “a UT spokesman” and that “Allen is considered day-to-day”.

This is obviously detrimental news for the Longhorns, who are getting set to square off against head coach Mike Boynton and the seven-seed Oklahoma State Cowboys in the Big 12 Men’s Tournament quarterfinals on March 9. Texas will now have to face Oklahoma State without one of its key leaders and crucial starters in Allen.

Not only is Allen an important player in Texas’ starting unit, but he also had some past success against Oklahoma State.

The fifth-year senior forward Allen was an All-Big 12 Honorable Mention this season after he ranked third on the team in scoring in conference play (11.3 points per game) and led the team in rebounds during the regular season. He also started in every single game during the regular season for the Longhorns, while ranking third on the team in minutes per game (28.0).

Assuming his spot in the starting five against Oklahoma State will likely be either fellow senior forward Christian Bishop or senior shooting guard/wing Sir’Jabari Rice. Bishop is the only one of the usual reserve players for the Longhorns that has a start under his belt this season.

Moreover, Allen’s track record of success against the Pokes speaks for itself during his two seasons playing for the Longhorns. According to Sports Reference, Allen is the only Longhorns player that scored in the double figures in every single outing for Texas against Oklahoma State in the last two seasons.

Allen was a factor in the Longhorns sweeping Oklahoma State during the regular season series in two meetings between these two teams. Texas dominated Oklahoma State during the regular season, winning both meetings by an average margin of a dozen points.
