Texas Basketball: Staff predictions for Round of 64 vs. Colgate
In less than one hour, interim head coach Rodney Terry and the two-seed Texas basketball will tip off their matchup in the Round of 64 on March 16 against head coach Matt Langel and the 15-seed Colgate Raiders. Texas will face Colgate in this Round of 64 matchup in the Midwest Region at Wells Fargo Arena in Des Moines, IA, with the tip-off time set for 6:25 p.m. CT.
Texas will be looking for its second consecutive trip to the Round of 32 if it can stave off the upset bid from the Patriot League regular season and conference tournament champion Colgate.
Terry and the Longhorns do have some momentum coming into the NCAA Tournament following a 76-56 dismantling of the top-seeded Kansas Jayhawks in the Big 12 Men’s Tournament final on March 11. Texas has won four straight games heading into the Big Dance.
Yet, Colgate also has a lot of momentum heading into the Big Dance. Langel and the Raiders have won nine games in a row following a convincing 18-point win over the Lafayette Leopards in the Patriot League Tournament final on March 8.
Texas is favored in this game by more than a dozen points ahead of tip-off in Des Moines against Colgate. Here’s a look at our staff predictions as the two-seed Texas gets set to square off against the 15-seed Colgate in the Round of 64 Midwest Region on the evening of March 16.
Hook’em Headlines staff predictions for Texas basketball vs. Colgate
Andrew Miller
Texas has the edge in terms of depth, length, and athleticism. Terry and the Longhorns are nearly a 14-point favorite in this game for a reason. If the backcourt duo of senior guard Marcus Carr and sophomore guard Tyrese Hunter comes to play in this game, Texas should get a win without too much of an issue.
Score prediction: Texas-79, Colgate-65
Shane Black
The Colgate Raiders may not have been the most friendly 15-seed to draw, but if the Longhorns play their game, they will have no problem advancing to the Round of 32.
Texas’ athleticism should help them run the Raiders off the three-point line and funnel their offensive attack into trappable spots on the floor. Look for the Horns, led by Marcus Carr, to run in transition early and often. Barring a blistering night from beyond the arc for the Patriot League champs, Texas should win this one by double digits.
