Another offensive standout this offseason that we’ve talked a lot about on the site is the former converted wide receiver and sophomore running back Savion Red.

Texas moved the second-year former Grand Prairie High School product Red from slot receiver to running back ahead of the start of spring ball to fill depth needs at the position. Red brings a different dynamic to this Texas offense, giving Sark a versatile back that he can utilize in different ways out of the backfield or to motion out in the passing game.

Red can help the Longhorns trot out some really interesting two-back sets that can create opportunities to confuse opposing defenses with pre-snap motion this fall.

And from what we’ve heard about Red’s performance in running back and receiver drills with his position group, it sounds like he will be the unique weapon out of the backfield that the staff wanted in the RB room when he was converted from wideout. Red has received praise directly from running backs coach Tashard Choice.

Moreover, the two running backs we’ve heard the most about in terms of their ability to make a positive impression on the coaches and others within the program this spring are Red and freshman early enrollee Cedric Baxter Jr.

And while Red is still getting reps with in the third and fourth-order at running back this spring, he’s likely primed to make a big move if he can continue to show out for the rest of the offseason the way he has in the last couple of months. Red’s unique skill set will give him a set role in this running back room, especially with the way he’s proven himself in the first week of spring camp.
