Texas has made some real progress in terms of defensive back recruiting in the 2024 class in the last few months. Safeties coach Blake Gideon and the Longhorns have recruited one particular position well in the 2024 class, which could lead to a couple of key commitments in the near future.

One of the priority safeties to watch in the 2024 class this spring for the Longhorns is the highly touted four-star IMG Academy defensive back Jordon Johnson-Rubell.

Texas just hosted Johnson-Rubell for an unofficial trip to Austin last weekend. And it sounds like that trip saw Gideon, cornerbacks coach Terry Joseph, and the Longhorns continue to make a lot of the right moves in this recruitment.

Cole Patterson of Orangebloods reported in a tweet on March 12 that Johnson-Rubell is looking to make a return trip (which would likely be an official visit) during the summer.

But it sounds like Texas might’ve already made a big enough move in this recruitment to start taking a firm lead among the top schools before anything gets put on the books for an official visit for Johnson-Rubell this summer. A report from On3’s Chad Simmons on March 14 noted that the unofficial trip for Johnson-Rubell last weekend “made a big impression”.

Texas reportedly is giving a great pitch to Johnson-Rubell, and he really likes the fit with the Longhorns’ defensive scheme.

Johnson-Rubell brings a level of versatility to the table that fits well with Texas’ philosophy in defensive back recruiting. He has the talent and the multiplicity to excel while playing at either safety spot, or even as a nickelback.

The relationship and scheme fit seem to both be boxes that Texas checks for Johnson-Rubell.
