Kolaj Cobbins, EDGE

Edge rusher will continue to be a position of need for the Longhorns in the 2024 class. While Pete Kwiatkowski, Jeff Choate, and the Longhorns did a nice job of adding a lot of depth and talent at EDGE in the 2023 class, the defensive staff will continue to add bodies this cycle at the position.

And despite a recent commitment to LSU, one key edge rusher recruit that could continue to be prioritized by Texas’ staff is the talented four-star Destrehan (LA) product Kolaj Cobbins.

Cobbins committed to LSU on March 3, just prior to what was shaping up to be a spring that he was probably going to take visits to Baton Rouge and Austin had he decided later in the offseason.

From what we can gather, Cobbins’ commitment to LSU was a bit of a surprise to those in and around the Texas program. A report from Hudson Standish of Horns247 on March 3 (paid content) notes that he was “caught off guard” by the abrupt decision from Cobbins to commit to LSU that day.

But he also mentions that he believes that the Texas coaches will probably continue to recruit the 6-foot-3 and 200-pound edge rusher through the whistle if a need at the position persists throughout this cycle.

A sign that Texas is still plugging away in this recruitment would be if Cobbins makes it back to Austin for an unofficial or official trip in the spring or summer. Although, this won’t be a flip that will be pulled off easily. LSU is doing a nice job holding onto some of its top in-state priorities in the 2024 class, and Cobbins looks to be at the top of Kelly and Co.’s board on defense.
