For the first time since 2008, Texas basketball will be competing in the Sweet 16 in the NCAA Tournament. Interim head coach Rodney Terry and the two-seed Texas will take on head coach Sean Miller and the three-seed Xavier Musketeers in the Sweet 16 in the Midwest Region on March 24.

Terry and the Longhorns head into this Sweet 16 matchup against Xavier sporting a record of 28-8 (12-6 Big 12) following a narrow 71-66 win over the 10-seed Penn State Nittany Lions in the Round of 32 on March 18. Texas has now defeated the 15-seed Colgate Raiders and 10-seed Penn State in the first two rounds of the Big Dance in the Midwest Region.

Meanwhile, Penn State comes into the Sweet 16 with a record of 27-9 (15-5 Big East) following a convincing 84-73 win over the 11-seed Pitt Panthers in the Round of 32 on March 19. Xavier has now knocked off the 14-seed Kennesaw State Owls and 11-seed Pitt in the first two rounds of the NCAA Tournament.

Here’s a look at the TV/streaming information and game time as the two-seed Texas gets set to face the three-seed Xavier in the Sweet 16 at the T-Mobile Center in Kansas City, MO, on March 24.

Texas vs. Xavier preview

This will be the first time that Texas and Xavier have met on the hardwood since 2019 when the two squared off in the NIT. Texas won that matchup in overtime in 2019 over Xavier.

The two teams have also met twice in the NCAA Tournament (in 1990 and 2004). Texas and Xavier split those two matchups in the NCAA Tournament in the last few decades, with the Musketeers taking the most recent one in the Sweet 16 in 2004.

Xavier is the highest-seeded team and the highest-ranked team by Kenpom that Texas has faced so far in the NCAA Tournament. The high-flying and uber-efficient offense drawn up by Miller will definitely be a tough test for Terry and the Longhorns staff.

But facing efficient offenses is nothing new for Texas in the Midwest Region of the NCAA Tournament thus far. Each of the three opponents in the Big Dance for the Longhorns thus far ranks in the top 50 in the NCAA in offensive rating and three-point shooting percentage.

Each of the three also ranks outside of the top 150 in the country in defensive rating this season. The combination of exploiting advantageous matchups on offense while finding creative ways to limit the opponent’s offensive efficiency will be the task at hand once again for Terry and the Longhorns in this contest against the Musketeers.

If Texas is able to top Xavier on March 24, it will face the winner of the one-seed Houston Cougars and five-seed Miami Hurricanes in the other Midwest Region Sweet 16 matchup on March 26. The last time that Texas made it to the Elite Eight was in 2008 before former head coach Rick Barnes and the Longhorns fell short to Derrick Rose and the top-seeded Memphis Tigers.
