One of the most highly touted new enrollees that arrived on campus this spring is the former elite five-star recruit and Florida native running back CJ Baxter Jr.

The top-ranked running back recruit in the nation in the 2023 class has appeared to be everything that was advertised, and maybe more, so far in spring camp. Baxter really took the bull by the horns since the start of winter conditioning this semester and never looked back.

From a physicality perspective, Baxter definitely arrived on campus ready to compete. He’s stood out in the individual running back drills and even impressed his teammates and the coaches during the first open scrimmage of the spring last weekend.

It sounds like Baxter was one of the biggest offensive standouts during the scrimmage, coming up with some elusive plays on the ground and looking like he has made some strides in terms of his blocking and route running ability out of the backfield.

By the looks of it, Baxter is going to be competing for the starting running back job in no time. For the time being, the pecking order at the running back position in terms of the distribution of practice reps goes redshirt sophomore Jonathon Brooks, sophomore Jaydon Blue, and then Baxter (in that order). And that could change again upon the return of redshirt senior running back Keilan Robinson, who is dealing with a lower-body injury at the moment.

Baxter is doing everything he can so far this spring, though, to prove the RB1 job belongs to him as the bell cow in this running back room.
