Some abrupt news came the way of the Texas football program on the recruiting trail on March 30. It appears that Texas and head coach Steve Sarkisian are hosting the elite five-star Timpson (TX) wide receiver/athlete Terry Bussey on an unofficial visit to campus this week.

A report from Hudson Standish of Horns247 on the evening of March 30 (paid content) notes that Bussey is making the unofficial trip to the Forty Acres to see campus before he competes in the Clyde Littlefield Texas Relays in Austin this weekend.

Bussey was reportedly in Austin last weekend for the OT7 event. But he wasn’t able to make it to campus for the open practice/scrimmage on March 25, which is when more than a dozen recruits were seeing Texas amid the Junior Day festivities.

This unofficial trip to campus for Bussey will be to get a look at the football facilities as well as get some time to connect with the coaches.

This is a notable development in a recruitment that the Longhorns have made a big push in of late. Texas originally offered the electric and uber-talented 5-foot-10 and 180-pound in-state product Bussey in late January.

Steve Wiltfong of 247Sports mentioned in a report a few days ago that Texas “is coming on strong” of late in the race to land a commitment from Bussey.

Moreover, it sounds like Bussey and the Longhorns are very much still in the feeling things out stage of the recruitment. While Bussey did take a couple of unofficial visits to the 40 last year (the latest coming in mid-November for the TCU game), the communication between the two parties didn’t heat up until early 2023.

One notable nugget from this recruitment for the Longhorns, though, is that the staff offered Bussey as a defensive back. That is why cornerbacks coach Terry Joseph and co-DC Pete Kwiatkowski are two of the leading recruiters for Bussey.

A lot of the top schools in this recruitment have offered Bussey as a wide receiver, which will be something to watch.

It’s clear that Texas has caught Bussey’s attention since he received the offer on Jan. 26. We will continue to monitor the feedback coming out of this unofficial trip since it could serve as a building block for Texas to continue to make moves in this recruitment heading into the summer.

Bussey’s recruitment is still in its early stages, as he’s still raking in the offers on the trail in the last couple of months. Some of the schools to watch that have some longstanding relationships with Bussey are the Texas A&M Aggies, LSU Tigers, and Texas Tech Red Raiders.
