Texas Football: 4 underclassmen that have improved the most this spring
Texas football and head coach Steve Sarkisian are in the midst of the third full week of spring camp, with around a half-dozen practices remaining until the annual Orange-White spring football game on April 15. And there is only one more practice remaining this week as this is one of the lighter weeks on the spring schedule.
I would have to consider the first half of spring ball a real success for Sark and the Longhorns. We’ve heard about a ton of young and talented players stepping up and making some strides to keep both sides of the ball competitive in drills and the first open scrimmage, which took place last weekend amid the Junior Day festivities and the Coaches Clinic in Austin.
With a little more than two weeks remaining for spring ball, there isn’t much time left for players that are in critical position battles and those that are trying to work their way onto the two-deep to prove themselves. That means the next two weeks of drills will be critical to some of the underclassmen that have a chip on their shoulder this spring.
Most improved underclassmen for Texas football this spring
Here’s a look at four of the underclassmen with something to prove this spring that have improved the most through the first half of camp.
Savion Red, RB
One of the most pleasant surprises so far this spring for the Longhorns is the emergence of the recently converted running back and sophomore Savion Red. The former slot receiver is fitting in nicely at the running back position this spring, looking the part of one of the more versatile players in the RB room.
Red has drawn a lot of praise this spring from sources in and around the program, even including running backs coach Tashard Choice. Alex Dunlap of Orangebloods mentioned that Red made a lot of big plays with the third-team offense during the open scrimmage last weekend and has continued to look like one of the sharpest players at the position in practice in the last couple of weeks.
All in all, it sounds like Red is doing about as good as he possibly could after switching from wide receiver to running back this spring. He’s brought a new level of versatility to the running back room, and has proven to be a real threat in space during running back and team drills in practice.
