Texas Football: 4 underclassmen that have improved the most this spring
Cam Williams, OT
The most impressive offensive linemen among the non-first-team underclassmen so far this spring is the towering 6-foot-5 and 365-pound sophomore offensive tackle Cam Williams. For the way he changed his body and conditioning for the better this offseason, Williams has drawn a lot of praise from the coaches during spring ball.
In his Tuesday press conference on March 21, Sark gave Williams some kind words for the way he’s improved on the practice field and in the weight room this offseason.
"“I think Cam is doing well. I think he impressed everybody when he first got here with his ability to move. For such a big man, he’s got really good feet. He’s got a really high football IQ. I credit him and Coach Becton and his staff. I think his body has really changed. Not only has he lost weight, but he’s gotten stronger, and that’s a good sign."
Sark even mentioned during that press conference that he believes Williams could continue to work his way up the depth chart if he continues to excel on the practice field this spring and make some of the right moves in the weight room.
"“He’s pushing for a spot in that five. Like we tell the linemen all the time, we want to play the best five guys.”"
The biggest question mark that remains for Williams has to do with his ability as a pass blocker. Williams looks like he might still struggle to contain some of the quicker and more fluid edge rushers in the Big 12 this fall.
Yet, it does sound like Williams is making a lot of the right moves to continue to carry his massive frame well. If he can continue to improve his foot speed this offseason, he will keep pushing senior offensive tackle Christian Jones (or one of the starting interior offensive linemen) for reps on the first team in practice.
