Texas Football: 3 players that shined in Saturday’s spring practice
Gavin Holmes, CB
Another name that we’ve heard a ton about this spring that has made a positive impression on his teammates and the coaches is the former Wake Forest Demon Deacons redshirt sophomore cornerback transfer Gavin Holmes. The 5-foot-11 and 175-pound fourth-year corner has made one of the biggest splashes this spring of any of the new additions to the program on the defensive side of the ball.
Holmes has apparently made a big push to start closing in on the starting spot at field corner with how well he has played in practice and team/scrimmage drills this spring. We’ve heard more about the plays he’s made and his consistency in practice than the other corners competing for starting reps at the field spot, true freshman Malik Muhammad and sophomore Terrance Brooks.
In practice on April 1, Holmes reportedly hauled in a nice pick in the red zone on redshirt sophomore quarterback Quinn Ewers. Holmes made a nice read on the pass and showed an impressive reaction time and athleticism to be able to catch the ball off a tight end’s hands.
It’s worth mentioning that this is not the first time we’ve heard about Holmes making nice reads and plays on the ball in coverage and team drills this spring. Nahlin mentioned in his practice report that nabbing the pick he did on Saturday’s practice is the type of thing he’s done throughout spring camp.
Holmes sounds like he is making all the right moves to start securing the starting field corner spot heading into the fall with how consistently well he’s performed as a standout DB in one-on-one coverage this spring.
