Texas football has a couple of weeks of spring practice remaining before the annual Orange-White spring football game at DKR on April 15. This week, Texas and head coach Steve Sarkisian will get practice underway on April 4.

While there is plenty of progress to speak of so far this spring on both sides of the ball for Sark and the Longhorns, there are still some strides we need to see from the offense before the spring game in a couple of weeks. From what we’ve heard coming out of spring practice in the last few weeks, the defense held the edge in team drills over the offense.

The same could be said for the way that the defense set the tone against the offense in the scrimmages throughout the last two weekends.

There is a major positive for the offense coming out of practice and the scrimmages in the last two weekends, though. It sounds like redshirt sophomore quarterback Quinn Ewers has taken command of the offense and is looking more mature and composed on the practice field.

Ewers is the most consistent performer during individual and team drills among the quarterbacks. That trend has held true essentially throughout the entirety of spring camp thus far.

Texas football QB Quinn Ewers was reportedly “decisive and accurate” in last weekend’s closed scrimmage

And it sounds like Ewers continued to perform at a high level during the first closed scrimmage of spring ball last weekend. A scrimmage report from CJ Vogel of TFB Texas on April 3 (donor content) noted that Ewers “was decisive and accurate” during the closed scrimmage on April 1.

Ewers also reportedly “really turned some heads” with how impressive a lot of his throws were during the scrimmage.

One of the nicest throws we heard about from Ewers in the scrimmage last weekend was a deep ball that went for a touchdown to redshirt sophomore boundary receiver Casey Cain. Ewers put the ball right on the money to Cain for one of the multiple touchdown passes he had on the day.

Ewers seems to be connecting a lot more often on the deep ball this spring compared to the same time last year in camp. His timing and composure in the pocket have both improved this offseason, leading to the more frequent connections he’s found in scrimmage and team drills this spring.

Texas has five practices remaining before spring camp officially closes out with the Orange-White Game on April 15. Ewers, along with fellow quarterbacks Arch Manning and Maalik Murphy, will be some of the most highly-anticipated players to watch in the spring game in a couple of weeks.
