Texas basketball interested in Baylor G transfer LJ Cryer
One of the biggest names that have surfaced among Big 12 players in the NCAA Transfer Portal so far this offseason is someone that reportedly made contact with Texas basketball on April 5. Former Baylor Bears junior guard LJ Cryer “has heard from” Texas since he entered the transfer portal on April 3, per a report from On3’s Joe Tipton on Twitter on the morning of April 5.
A report from ESPN’s Jeff Borzello on April 3 noted that Cryer “plans to enter the transfer portal” this offseason.
Cryer entered the portal after announcing on his Twitter page on March 29 that he will be entering the 2023 NBA Draft while maintaining his collegiate eligibility. He will have two years of eligibility remaining at the collegiate level at his next stop out of the portal, assuming he does return to college for at least one more season.
Texas is reportedly one of the more than 10 schools that Cryer has heard from since his name surfaced in the transfer portal a couple of days ago. Some of the other schools that have reached out to him in the portal include the Kansas Jayhawks, Kansas State Wildcats, Houston Cougars, Gonzaga Bulldogs, Texas A&M Aggies, Indiana Hoosiers, Arkansas Razorbacks, and LSU Tigers.

It’s interesting to note that Cryer reportedly (per On3’s Tipton) that Cryer heard from more than a dozen schools within the first hour of his name officially surfacing in the portal on April 5.
This doesn’t come as much of a surprise, though, as Cryer is one of the most highly-sought after players in the portal at the moment. The 2022-23 All-Big 12 Third-Team guard was one of the most efficient scoring guards in the conference in the season that was.
Cryer was one of a whopping three Baylor guards/wings that averaged at least 15 points per game during the 2022-23 campaign. He did so while shooting an impressive 45 percent from the field and 42 percent from deep.
If Texas is able to nab a commitment from Cryer out of the portal this offseason, he would help to immediately upgrade the offensive potency of the backcourt unit. Cryer is a natural scorer that can put the ball in the hoop from almost every level of the floor in the settled offensive halfcourt.
Cryer is not only capable of creating his own offense, but he can also be a lethal catch-and-shoot threat from deep two-point range and from beyond the arc.
Texas has already seen three key guards from last season’s squad either run out of collegiate eligibility or declare for the 2023 NBA Draft early this offseason. Sophomore guard Tyrese Hunter declared for the 2023 NBA Draft while maintaining his collegiate eligibility, while senior shooting guard/wing Sir’Jabari Rice and senior guard Marcus Carr have run out of eligibility following the conclusion of the 2022-23 season.
