Texas lands Tre Johnson

When Texas signed Rodney Terry to a five-year deal on Mar 27, Athletic Director Chris Del Conte showed his commitment to Terry as a coach and program builder. Program building starts by laying foundations on the recruiting trail, and that is precisely what Terry is doing with the No. 1 player in the class of 2024, Tre Johnson.

The Lake Highlands (TX) product is a rising senior shooting guard out of the Dallas metro area. Johnson is a lanky 6-foot-5 with as good of a jumper as you will see at the high school level. He has a tremendous feel for the game and is already being discussed as a top pick in the 2025 NBA Draft.

If Coach Terry could land Johnson’s signature in his first full recruiting cycle as the head man for Texas, that would speak volumes to his pedigree as a recruiter.

Terry’s first trip after being hired as the full-time head coach was up to Dallas to see Johnson. The two have built a relationship over the last year as Johnson took an official visit to Austin in Sept 2022. Johnson recently noted that he and Terry have “an amazing relationship” and “talk about every other day.”

Tre Johnson is the type of prospect that could define a tenure for a head coach. As it stands right now, Terry and Texas have as good of a chance as anyone to land his signature.
