The first Texas basketball player to hit the NCAA Transfer Portal emerged on the night of April 7. Stadium’s Jeff Goodman reported on the evening of April 7 in a tweet that freshman guard and former blue-chip recruit Rowan Brumbaugh will enter the transfer portal this offseason.

A report from Horns247 also confirmed the initial reports that Brumbaugh will enter the transfer portal after spending one season on the Forty Acres.

Brumbaugh didn’t play a single game for the Longhorns during his true freshman campaign last season. The plan was to redshirt him for the first year of his collegiate career given the guard depth that Texas had in the mix last season.

Brumbaugh got to learn under the likes of senior guard Marcus Carr, sophomore guard Tyrese Hunter, and senior shooting guard/wing Sir’Jabari Rice (among others).

Yet, Brumbaugh was originally recruited to Texas by former head coach Chris Beard. It was Beard that swung the recruitment of the 6-foot-4 and 185-pound Brumbaugh late in the 2022 cycle. Brumbaugh was originally looking at the Northwestern Wildcats, Wisconsin Badgers, and Georgetown Hoyas as some of the top schools for his decision.

Texas made a late run to make up a ton of ground and eventually get Brumbaugh in the 2022 signing class alongside five-star recruits Arterio Morris and Dillon Mitchell.

Brumbaugh will now be looking for his second college in as many years this offseason. He leaves the Forty Acres with all four years of eligibility remaining at his next stop.

Meanwhile, newly-hired full-time head coach Rodney Terry and the Longhorns are left pretty thin in the backcourt rotation. Texas has now lost the likes of Carr, Brumbaugh, Rice, and potentially Hunter this offseason. Carr and Rice ran out of eligibility this offseason and Hunter declared for the 2023 NBA Draft while maintaining his collegiate eligibility.

Texas finished up the 2022-23 season with a record of 29-9 (12-6 Big 12) after making its first Elite Eight appearance in more than a decade. Terry and the Longhorns were ousted by the five-seed Miami Hurricanes in the Elite Eight late last month.
