Temple

Another potential landing spot for Brumbaugh out of the portal this offseason that could see a past relationship with a coach from his days being recruited out of high school reignited is with the Temple Owls in the American Athletic Conference.

Temple recently hired former Penn State Nittany Lions head coach Adam Fisher after the former bench boss Aaron McKie stepped down last month. McKie spent four seasons as Temple’s head coach, posting a record of 52-56 (.481 winning percentage).

Fisher will now look to kickstart the Temple men’s hoops program, which hasn’t made it to the Big Dance since 2019. There was once a point in time during the 2000s and 2010s when the Owls were a standout mid-major program. From 2007-2013, Temple made the tournament every single year under the direction of former head coach Fran Dunphy.

If Fisher can have a similar impact on the Temple basketball program that he did on staff at Penn State in the season that was, the Owls will be in a good spot moving forward. Penn State was one of the hottest major conference teams down the stretch this season, which included an appearance in the Big Ten Tournament title game and a run to the Round of 64 in the Big Dance.

Moreover, there are two reasons why it would make a lot of sense for Brumbaugh to consider Temple as a potential landing spot out of the portal this offseason.

First off, Brumbaugh has a relationship with Fisher that goes back to his recruitment out of high school a couple of years ago. Fisher was the leading recruiter for Brumbaugh when he was still on staff as a Penn State assistant.

Fisher had one of the better relationships with Brumbaugh that went back at least a year before the former four-star point guard signed with the Longhorns in the 2022 class.

The second reason why it would make sense for Brumbaugh to consider the Owls out of the portal this offseason is that he could get some immediate playing time next season. Temple has already lost a half-dozen key players to the portal this offseason, including three quality guards.

Temple is going to have to replace that depth somehow, and the portal will probably be one of the places that Fisher and his staff turn first to fill the roster needs in the coming months.
