Texas basketball lost a key part of its staff this weekend with the news coming about on April 7 that newly-hired full-time head coach Rodney Terry will be without strength and conditioning coach John Reilly ahead of the 2023-24 season.

Jeff Howe of Horns247 reported on the night of April 7 that Terry and the Longhorns staff will be losing Reilly following the conclusion of the 2022-23 season.

"A source confirmed to Horns247 on Friday that John Reilly, who has overseen the program’s strength and conditioning training for the past two seasons, has moved on from the Longhorns. The source said they weren’t aware of where Reilly’s next stop will be, only that he won’t return to the Forty Acres."

It sounds like this was a bit of an abrupt loss for the Texas staff early this offseason. This Horns247 report noted that the source within the program wasn’t “aware of where Reilly’s next stop will be” upon his departure from the Longhorns.

This loss for the Texas staff is a notable one. Terry said after Texas’ postseason run came to an end in the Elite Eight a couple of weekends ago that “I’m hoping our whole staff is back and we go on another great run”. He included Reilly in that group of “elite” Texas coaches/staffers he wanted back next season.

Second-year Texas basketball S&C coach John Reilly leaving the program

Reilly was in his second year at Texas as the strength and conditioning coach during the 2022-23 season. He joined the program when former Texas head coach Chris Beard brought him aboard in his first year on the 40, ahead of the 2021-22 campaign.

Prior to his two-year stint at Texas, Reilly was the head strength and conditioning coach under Beard with the Texas Tech Red Raiders for five seasons. Excluding the COVID-19 year in 2020, when the NCAA Tournament was canceled, Reilly helped his teams to five consecutive appearances in the Big Dance.

Texas made the NCAA Tournament in each of the last two years with Reilly as part of the staff. Texas Tech also made it to the NCAA Tournament in each of the last three years it was possible (2018-2021) with Reilly as the S&C coach.

Texas finished up the 2022-23 season with a record of 29-9 (12-6 Big 12). Terry and the Longhorns were ousted by the five-seed Miami Hurricanes in the Elite Eight in a season where Texas was able to claim the Big 12 Men’s Tournament crown and come within one game of winning the Big 12 regular season title.
