So far this spring, we’ve heard a lot of good things about players that are either new additions to the Texas football program or are trying out new positions in camp. Texas and head coach Steve Sarkisian didn’t have a ton of noteworthy position changes heading into the spring.

But the position changes that were made were pretty significant when you look at how the depth chart could shake out this fall. Some significant position changes Sark and the Longhorns made before spring ball included moving sophomore slot receiver Savion Red to running back and cross-training sophomore boundary cornerback Austin Jordan at the star position behind senior defensive back Jahdae Barron.

It sounds like Red has settled in nicely as a versatile weapon that Sark and the Longhorns can utilize in multiple ways out of the backfield. Red is a name we’ve heard constantly in terms of the spring standouts thus far for the Longhorns.

Jordan has also made some noise as a defensive back that brings a lot of versatility and growth to the table early this offseason.

There are more position changes, or tweaks at the very least, that have come about in the last couple of weeks in spring camp that are worth noting. Some of the position changes and tweaks haven’t been talked about a ton either.

Key late spring position changes for Texas football

Here’s a look at three position changes for the Longhorns late this spring.

Cam Williams, OL

One of the most abrupt position changes in practice this week for the Longhorns came along the offensive line. A practice report from Eric Nahlin of Inside Texas on April 7 (paid content) mentioned that sophomore Cam Williams got reps along the interior offensive line in practice on April 6.

More specifically, Williams took significant reps at right guard with the second-teamers in practice. It also sounds like Williams took reps along the interior offensive line during team drills and the closed scrimmage on April 7. But he did take more reps back at offensive tackle in Friday’s closed scrimmage, as he rotated between his usual position and right guard.

Since Thursday’s practice wasn’t in full pads, it will be interesting to see if Williams continues to take reps at right guard when the Longhorns get pads back on for practice next week.

This report from IT’s Nahlin also stated that getting Williams some reps at right guard could be to get some real competition going with the talented sophomore offensive guard DJ Campbell. It doesn’t sound like Campbell has really ascended the way OL coach/OC Kyle Flood and the Longhorns wanted him to this spring.

Another reason for the move could be that Texas is looking strong at first-team offensive tackle. The standout duo of sophomore left tackle Kelvin Banks Jr. and redshirt senior right tackle Christian Jones seems to be getting the job done and more this spring.

Heading into spring camp, it looked like Williams was going to be able to push Jones a bit for first-team reps at right tackle. But Jones has staved off any competition coming his way for the first-team right tackle job.
