The most positive standout to hear about from the final day of full-pads practice this week is the former blue-chip recruit and second-year safety BJ Allen Jr. The 6-foot-1 and 205-pound Aledo, TX, native needed to have a big showing this spring with all of the talent and depth present in the secondary for the Longhorns.

Allen started out spring camp getting third-team reps at the safety position, occasionally behind a couple of walk-ons. He had to work his way up the depth chart this spring to start getting more reps with the second-team defense in practice and scrimmage settings.

And it sounds like Allen started to get an opportunity to prove himself with some second-team safety reps in individual and team drills in the final couple of weeks of spring practice. Allen is one of the safeties we’ve heard more about in the last couple of weeks in terms of the DBs making positive strides in practice.

He’s started to find his role in the defense and show more ranginess in pass coverage.

Need proof of Allen’s progressions in spring practice this week? Apparently, he came up with two picks in team drills on the final day of full-pads practice.
