It looks like the losses to the NCAA Transfer Portal for head coach Steve Sarkisian and Texas football won’t all have to wait until after the spring game this coming weekend. While the transfer portal does open up officially on April 15, Texas lost three players to the portal in one day alone on April 12.

All three of the players that were reported to enter the transfer portal on April 12 weren’t expected to be starters this fall, though. It looks like a lot of these portal losses that took place in the middle of this week are those that probably weren’t going to solidify a spot on the two-deep (maybe outside of one of the portal departures).

I do have to give credit to Sark and the Longhorns staff, though, for their ability to manage this roster. Texas didn’t suffer a single portal departure throughout the entirety of spring ball, up until the morning of April 12.

With that in mind, here’s a look at three Longhorns players that entered the portal on April 12.

Trevell Johnson, LB

The second portal loss that was reported for the Longhorns on April 12 was second-year linebacker and former three-star recruit Trevell Johnson. The 5-foot-11 and 200-pound linebacker and Arlington-Martin High School product will be looking for another home via the portal after spending one season at Texas.

Johnson didn’t get any live-game reps for Texas last season, thus he will have all four years of eligibility remaining at his next stop out of the portal.

This spring, Johnson was fighting an uphill battle in terms of being able to make his way onto the two-deep at the linebacker position. Texas’ strong 2023 recruiting class at linebacker also heightened the competition that Johnson faced at the position in spring ball.
