3 Texas football players that entered the portal today
Derrick Brown, EDGE/OLB
Another defensive player for the Longhorns that entered the portal on April 12 was the 6-foot-3 and 210-pound redshirt freshman edge rusher Derrick Brown. The former blue-chip recruit and Texarkana, TX, native didn’t see any live-game action for the Longhorns last season.
Heading into the offseason, it looked like Brown could be a name to watch among the edge rushers on the roster for the spring semester. He does have some real upside if he fills out his frame. Brown is just playing too light right now to be a competitive edge rusher at the Power Five level in Pete Kwiatkowski’s defensive scheme.
This move does still come as a bit of a surprise, though. Brown was one of the more vocal leaders that helped recruit a lot of guys to Texas’ 2022 class. I’m not saying that he was the biggest factor in anyone’s recruitment that Texas landed in the 2022 class from the high school ranks, but he definitely provided some positive energy for that group.
Brown was also one of the more active Longhorns players in supporting the team via social media since last fall.
Similar to Johnson, Brown will enter the portal with all four years of eligibility remaining at his next stop this offseason.
