The biggest loss that Sark and the Longhorns suffered among the portal departures on April 12 was sophomore wide receiver Brenen Thompson. The 5-foot-11 and 165-pound track star was the first Longhorns player that was reported to enter the portal on April 12 (or at least requested to do so when the portal opens on April 15).

Thompson took offensive and/or special teams snaps in eight games for the Longhorns during his true freshman campaign last season. Of those eight games he played last season, Thompson was targeted twice. Those two targets resulted in one catch for 32 yards against the Oklahoma State Cowboys on the road on Oct.22.

This is an interesting case since Thompson is the only player on this list that requested to enter the portal on April 12 that wasn’t participating in spring ball for the Longhorns. Instead, he chose to run track this semester.

Texas also brought in a lot of talent and depth this offseason at the wide receiver position. The Longhorns added the former Georgia Bulldogs sophomore wide receiver AD Mitchell via the portal and a trio of blue-chip recruits from the high school ranks in the 2023 class.

Between a trio of new wideout additions standing out in spring ball (Mitchell, DeAndre Moore Jr., and Johntay Cook II) and Thompson potentially falling behind in the battle for a spot on the two-deep, there is a bit more clarity that surfaces as to why he could’ve entered the portal this week.
