Texas Football: 4 early enrollees bound to breakout in spring game
Johntay Cook II, WR
As I stated in the last part of this list, the true freshman wide receiver Cook is going to be someone that could be fun to watch in the spring game this weekend as part of this talented and deep Texas offense.
The DeSoto High School product and former elite five-star recruit has looked the part this spring as a wide receiver capable of making a big splash for the Longhorns right away this fall. Cook has proved to be a real technician at the wide receiver position in terms of his route-running ability and in-air adjustments.
Cook has done all of this while facing one of the deepest groups of defensive backs seen at Texas in the last couple of decades this spring in team drills and scrimmage settings. The only difference for this weekend is that Cook will now get to put on a show in front of more than 10,000 fans at DKR.
A big weekend for Cook could have positive reverberations for Texas beyond what it would do for the freshman wideout’s confidence. Texas is hosting an important group of visiting recruits in the midst of the spring game festivities this weekend. Cook impressing as a true freshman early enrollee is a nice pitch for the Texas staff to sell the priority recruits on the 40 on April 15.
If Cook can put on a show this weekend in the spring game, it would also mean that Texas has somewhere between six and eight legitimate impact players among receivers and tight ends coming out of spring ball. We already know what returning players such as Xavier Worthy, Jordan Whittington, JT Sanders, and even Casey Cain can do. That’s not to mention what Texas is getting with the additions of AD Mitchell and Moore.
Cook has all the talent in the world, and I fully expect him to put that on display with a big spring game showing on April 15.
