Texas Football: 3 players that shined in final week of spring practice
A little more than 24 hours ago, Texas football wrapped up the final week of spring practice with a day of drills in helmets, shoulder pads, and shorts. With the annual Orange-White spring football game looming at DKR on April 15, head coach Steve Sarkisian and the staff weren’t going to run a full-pads practice within a couple of days of the spring game action.
While there usually isn’t much fanfare surrounding the final practice of spring ball, especially with the spring game looming, there were still some important notes that came out of drills this week. Texas had a couple of injuries crop up and tried some more cross-training in practice in the last few days of drills that could produce some interesting results in the spring game on April 15.
We also have plenty of notes and practice reports to dissect from this week that are worth writing about before the spring game kicks off in a little less than one day.

With this in mind, here’s a look at three Longhorns players that shined in the final week of spring practice.
Cam Williams, OL
One of the most intriguing storylines that cropped up in the last couple of weeks of spring practice was the move for the Longhorns to cross-train sophomore offensive tackle Cam Williams at interior offensive line. More specifically, Williams has taken some of the first and second-team reps at right guard in the last two weeks of spring drills and in one scrimmage.
And it now looks like Williams will be getting first-team reps during the spring game this weekend at right guard with sophomore interior offensive lineman DJ Campbell out due to injury.
We’ve heard mostly good things about Williams’ performances in spring practice while taking reps at the right guard spot. A practice report from Orangebloods on April 13 (subscriber content) included that one team source said Williams “dominated” in team drills in the final practice of the week.
In fact, this practice report stated that Williams was the “best down blocker during practice” earlier this week. He apparently made a nice block on one play in team drills that moved junior interior defensive lineman Vernon Broughton off the line of scrimmage.
Moving bodies was nothing new for Williams this week, though. His ability to move multiple levels deep into the defense in team drills and scrimmage settings, especially blocking for the run, in the last couple of weeks is unquestioned.
Without a doubt, Williams will be a player to watch along the offensive line in the spring game this weekend.
