Predicting Texas football’s next portal loss after Jaden Alexis
Charles Wright, QB
The Texas quarterback room is absolutely loaded with NFL-caliber talent after Sark, QB coach AJ Milwee, and the Longhorns brought in the nation’s No. 1 rated recruit in the nation in the 2023 class. Former elite five-star Isidore Newman quarterback recruit Arch Manning puts Texas three deep in the QB room in terms of players at the position that were five-star recruits at least at one point in time coming out of high school.
What Texas has between redshirt sophomore Quinn Ewers, redshirt freshman Maalik Murphy, and Arch in the quarterback room makes it extremely difficult to see others such as redshirt sophomore Charles Wright and sophomore Cole Lourd move up the depth chart in the next couple of years.
Murphy and Arch got the second and third-team reps at quarterback in practice and scrimmage settings this spring. And it looks like Murphy and Manning will be the top two quarterbacks in the spring game on April 15 behind Ewers.
Moreover, there was a point in time when Wright was the third-string quarterback for the Longhorns behind Ewers and junior Hudson Card last season. Wright was the traveling quarterback throughout a lot of the road games last season for the Longhorns as Murphy was still dealing with injury issues that limited him in practice.
There is some speculation going on of late regarding what the future of someone like Wright looks like on the Forty Acres since Texas has so much talent and depth in the quarterback room this year. If he wants a path to playing time at any point in the next few years, it would probably have to come elsewhere given the depth in the Texas QB room at the moment.
