Texas Football: 4 takeaways from the Longhorns spring game
Running back goes four or five players deep this year
We didn’t get to see all that many flashes from the running back room in the spring game this weekend, outside of a big play or two from the sophomore duo of Jaydon Blue and Savion Red. Blue had a nice run early where he found his way through traffic and scampered for a 31-yard gain.
Red also proved to be the versatile weapon out of the backfield he was hyped up to be since converting from slot wide receiver ahead of spring ball. He had a few targets as a receiver out of the backfield and showed some good field vision in space in the spring game.
Some of the reads that Blue and Red made in the spring game left me impressed with the way that they’re settling into their roles in the offense this offseason. I think Blue proved to me that he is ready to assume a steady diet of live-game reps out of the backfield heading into the fall.
Meanwhile, Red gives the Longhorns a nice insurance policy with redshirt senior running back Keilan Robinson out this spring due to lingering injury issues.
Let’s remember that we didn’t really get to see that much out of Keilan and redshirt sophomore running back Jonathon Brooks this spring. And while we saw some flashes from true freshman running back CJ Baxter Jr. in the spring game and in various clips and practice reports in the last couple of months, there still is a lot more that he has to show this fall.
I came out of this spring game pretty convinced that this running back room has plenty of depth in the mix and that it will be fine after the departures of two players the caliber of Bijan Robinson and Roschon Johnson.
