The NCAA Transfer Portal spring window opened up with a bang on April 15 with a few names that are likely worth watching for Texas football fans. The biggest name that surfaced in the transfer portal upon the spring window opening on April 15 is the reigning National Champion and Georgia Bulldogs standout freshman defensive lineman Bear Alexander.

After contributing to a title-winning defensive line in Athens last season, Alexander put his name in the portal on April 15.

There will obviously be a ton of schools that would love to bring Alexander into the mix this spring. But I’d imagine that he is going to be pretty selective with the potential landing spots he entertains in the portal in the coming days and weeks.

Graham Coffey of Dawg Central tweeted on the afternoon of April 15 that two schools “to keep an eye on” in the race to land a commitment out of the portal from Alexander this spring are Texas and the USC Trojans.

A 247Sports report on April 15 also mentioned USC as a school to “watch” after Alexander entered the portal on this day.

It’s worth noting that there were some sightings on social media of Alexander’s guardian at the USC spring game on April 15.

Moreover, the No. 1 ranked linebacker recruit in the nation in the 2023 class and freshman Texas early enrollee Anthony Hill Jr. quoted the tweet that originally reported Alexander entering the transfer portal this weekend. Hill quoted that tweet telling Alexander to “come home.

Alexander is originally from Texas, as he played for Terrell High School as a freshman and then Dallas Skyline as a sophomore. The last season he played high school football in Texas was in 2020 with Denton Ryan. That just so happened to be the high school that Hill attended.

Hill and Alexander were teammates for one year at Denton Ryan in 2020.

If Texas does make a big push to nab a commitment from Alexander out of the portal, that would obviously be huge for DL coach Bo Davis and the Longhorns heading into the 2023 season. Davis and the Longhorns are still looking to add some depth along the defensive line coming out of spring ball.

Earlier this week, Texas hosted the former Minnesota Golden Gophers senior grad transfer defensive lineman Trill Carter on a multi-day visit to Austin (from April 11-13). Texas was also looking at the former Florida State Seminoles senior edge rusher/defensive end transfer Derrick McLendon II in the portal this spring.

Alexander spent one year at Georgia before putting his name in the transfer portal this spring. Last season at Georgia, Alexander took more than 150 defensive snaps over the course of a dozen games. In those 12 games played, he registered nine combined tackles, three tackles for loss, two sacks, two batted balls, 11 quarterback pressures, and five defensive stops.
