Maalik Murphy is the favorite to land the backup job heading into the fall

Another very impressive player for the Longhorns in the spring game on the offensive side of the ball was redshirt freshman quarterback Maalik Murphy. The second-year California native quarterback was actually the most productive in this position group for Sark and the Longhorns during the spring game this weekend.

Murphy completed 9 of his 13 passing attempts for 165 yards, one touchdown, and no interceptions.

In fact, none of the Texas quarterbacks had an interception during the spring game as both offenses played a pretty clean contest.

Yet, knowing that Murphy didn’t have any turnover-worthy plays is a major positive for his maturation this offseason. Murphy even had some catchable balls that were dropped by his wideouts in this spring game.

We talked the most about Murphy in terms of the offensive players for the Longhorns which were pleasant surprises in the spring game. Murphy had some nice reads and connected on one beautiful deep ball that went for a whopping 79-yard touchdown to true freshman wide receiver Johntay Cook II.

One of the biggest storylines heading into the fall will be the battle for the backup quarterback job behind Ewers. Murphy will be duking it out with true freshman quarterback Arch Manning for the backup job. And I think he established himself as the favorite to get that job and get the second-team practice reps heading into fall camp.
