Byron Murphy II is the best defensive lineman for Texas in 2023

A standout defensive player for the Longhorns in the spring game that we shouldn’t overlook is junior defensive lineman Byron Murphy II. Murphy, redshirt senior T’Vondre Sweat, and senior Alfred Collins proved in the spring game that the top three defensive linemen for the Longhorns are gamers heading into the fall.

It wasn’t just the spring game that the Texas fans and coaches got to see Murphy shine. He was a major standout for the Longhorns all throughout spring ball. We heard nothing but positive feedback this spring regarding the dominance and consistency that Murphy put on display during individual and team drills.

Murphy’s dominance also carried over to scrimmage settings and the spring game this weekend, just not in ways that really showed up on the stat sheet. Murphy finished up the spring game with a couple of quarterback pressures and one solo tackle.

But it was the ability to win the one-on-one battles in the trenches during the last few spring scrimmages and in the spring game that really showed how dominant Murphy can be in the trenches this fall.

During his weekly press conference following the conclusion of spring practice on April 11, Sark called Murphy “unblockable”. He also mentioned that Murphy “is going to be a problem” this fall.

Murphy was already one of the most productive and consistent defensive linemen for the Longhorns last season. And if his trajectory this spring is any indication, Murphy is going to be one of the best defensive linemen (if not one of the best players on the entire defense) for DL coach Bo Davis and the Longhorns in 2023.
