Texas football keeps setting ‘the pace’ for No. 1 2024 RB
This was a big weekend on the recruiting trail for the Texas football program in the midst of the spring game festivities on April 15. Texas and head coach Steve Sarkisian hosted more than a dozen priority blue-chip recruits during the spring game this weekend at Darrell K. Royal-Texas Memorial Stadium from the 2024, 2025, and 2026 classes.
A huge name that was on campus this weekend among the top priority recruits on either side of the ball for the Longhorns is the No. 1 ranked running back recruit in the nation in the 2024 class. The elite five-star IMG Academy running back Jerrick Gibson made his second unofficial trip to the 40 in 2023 and the third since last summer during the spring game this weekend.
Gibson has become a very frequent visitor on campus for the Longhorns this offseason. Texas keeps hitting home runs during each visit for Gibson to the Forty Acres in the last few months. He had a great visit to Texas during Junior Day back on the weekend of Jan. 21.
The Junior Day visit was an opportunity for running backs coach Tashard Choice and the rest of the Longhorns staff to keep building a strong relationship with Gibson after he had a good initial unofficial trip to Austin last summer.
Gibson was so impressed by the Junior Day trip a few months ago that he made a return trip for the spring game this weekend. And it sounds like Texas continued to make a positive impression on Gibson and his camp this weekend from the initial feedback we’ve heard about in the last 24 hours or so.

We already talked on the site today about how Gibson felt the trip to the 40 this weekend was “amazing” and that he thought Choice brought “electric energy”.
Texas football still sits at the top for 5-Star RB Jerrick Gibson
From everything we’re hearing in the last few months, it sounds like Gibson is becoming very comfortable during his visits to the 40. He and his family have a great connection with Sark and Choice. And the staff continues to give him a little bit of the feel that he is at home in Austin.
We got more information regarding Gibson’s impression of the spring game visit this weekend in a piece from Jason Suchomel of Orangebloods on April 16 (subscriber content). Suchomel reported that Texas “continues to set the pace” in this recruitment coming out of the weekend.
This report notes that Gibson and his family loved the time they spent in Austin in the last couple of days.
"“The visit was excellent. As always, they show us love, they show that they want Jerrick,” said Gibson’s father, Victor Jenkins."
Gibson’s father also stated that Texas continues to show them what “being a part of the Longhorn family” is like.
Something that caught my eye in this report from Suchomel was that he mentioned Gibson might be looking at making another return trip to Austin unofficially before his official visit from June 23-25. If that winds up coming to fruition, that would obviously be a great sign that Texas does sit in pole position among the top schools for Gibson this spring.
Choice and the Longhorns staff are doing great work on the recruiting trail at the running back position in the last couple of cycles. Texas is cooking something up to land the No. 1 rated running back recruit in the nation in two straight classes, both of which happen to be from the state of Florida.
