Texas Football: 3 biggest winners for the Horns from spring camp
Maalik Murphy, QB
Among the biggest and most positive storylines coming out of the spring game last weekend was the performance of redshirt freshman quarterback and former four-star recruit Maalik Murphy. The California native 6-foot-5 and 235-pound signal caller made some electric throws for the Orange Team in the spring game on April 15.
Anwar Richardson of Orangebloods went so far as to say that Murphy “stole the show” during the spring game.
The biggest highlight of his impressive throws during the spring game last weekend was a 79-yard deep ball that connected with true freshman wide receiver Johntay Cook for a touchdown.
Murphy showed some real gamesmanship in the pocket and put the impressive arm talent that we all know he has on display during the spring game, building up the hype of what he could become in a year or two for the Texas offense.
Moreover, without getting caught up too much in the Murphy hype train, there are some other reasons to be excited about the direction of his game. We wrote on the site recently that Murphy proved to be “way ahead of last year” for his development coming out of spring ball this offseason.
That’s not all that surprising given that we were hearing about Murphy coming on strong in the latter stages of spring practice before the Orange-White Game on April 15. He was showing an improving fundamental throwing motion in individual and team drills and was starting to find more chemistry with the wideouts in scrimmage settings.
The way that Murphy performed in the latter stages of spring ball, especially in the spring game, proves that he has a leg up on Arch in the backup quarterback competition heading into the fall. And while he has the momentum in his corner in this backup position battle coming out of the spring, Murphy will still need to have a solid fall camp to lock up that spot behind redshirt sophomore quarterback Quinn Ewers.
