One of the most highly coveted transfers in the spring portal window this offseason, the former Georgia Bulldogs standout freshman defensive lineman Bear Alexander, was someone that named Texas football among his top schools. Texas’ portal recruitment of Alexander didn’t seem too likely to come out successful from the start, though.

Literally within a couple of hours of Alexander’s name surfacing in the transfer portal last weekend, it was presumed that head coach Lincoln Riley and the USC Trojans were the favorites. It did look like Alexander was considering visits to other schools such as Texas and the Colorado Buffaloes, among a few other finalist schools he named this weekend.

But no other visits that we know of came to fruition for Alexander outside of a trip he took to see the Trojans earlier in the week.

Alexander announced his commitment to USC out of the portal via social media on April 23. He is one of well over a half-dozen portal commits that Riley and the Trojans have reeled in so far this offseason.

USC had a positional need along the defensive line, and the reigning National Champion Alexander should help the Trojans address that depth issue heading into the 2023 season.

Meanwhile, Texas addressed a depth need of its own along the defensive line earlier this week when it landed a commitment out of the portal from the former Minnesota Golden Gophers senior grad transfer Trill Carter. Defensive line coach Bo Davis and the Longhorns got an experienced and proven run stopper up front that gives this group another “big human” in the trenches in the 6-foot-2 and 310-pound Carter.

Landing a transfer commitment from Carter puts Texas at five portal additions in the 2023 class. According to the 247Sports Transfer Team Rankings, the 2023 Texas transfer class ranks at No. 48 in the nation. USC’s 2023 transfer class ranks at No. 2 in the nation behind Colorado after landing Alexander on April 23.
