The hottest portal name in most Texas hoops circles early this offseason is the former Oral Roberts standout senior guard Max Abmas. The two-time Summit League Player of the Year and three-time All-Summit League selection Abmas remains one of the most hotly contested portal players this week for a handful of schools pursuing his services.

The three schools heavily involved in this portal recruitment for Abmas at the moment are the Kansas State Wildcats, Wichita State Shockers, and Texas. And it sounds like the Baylor Bears are still making a push for late visit from Abmas before he makes a final decision.

But I’m pretty confident in saying that the top three schools that Abmas is whittling his decision down to this spring are Texas, Kansas State, and Wichita State.

Moreover, Texas had a lot of confidence in its positioning among Abmas’ top schools after he visited the Forty Acres last week. It looked like Texas made a big move in this portal recruitment late last week. Yet, the increasing possibility of Abmas making the trip to see Wichita State and newly-hired head coach (formerly with Abmas at Oral Roberts) Paul Mills is a reason for decreasing optimism on the 40 this week.

We’re watching to see how this situation plays out with the possibility of Abmas making the visit to see Wichita State and his former head coach Mills this week. If he does make the trip to Wichita in the coming days, I think that’ll make this portal recruitment a battle between the Longhorns and Shockers.

I’m pessimistic about Kansas State’s chances with Abmas due to the likelihood (per 247Sports) that North Texas transfer guard Tylor Perry ends up in Manhattan.
